From the creators of the German Hit Dark, comes another thriller that is sure to leave your hearts racing! 1899 is Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese's second project with Netflix and promises to be as enthralling as their predecessor. 1899 maintains the slightly eerie cinematography of Dark, serving up dread and thrill. The project takes a different path from that of Dark mostly inclined towards mystery and less time travel.
This show is truly international with an amazing linguistic diversity, 1899 has multiple European languages spoken in the series. From Polish to French, Spanish and German it is an appropriate montage of European culture.
The series follows a group of immigrants from different backgrounds traveling from Europe to New York in search of new opportunities. It's set in the titular year which is just at the cusp of a new century. Soon the optimism fades from among the passengers as the simple and uncomplicated journey turns into a horrifying nightmare. They soon encounter another migrant ship adrift on the open sea that had gone missing for months. This uncovered an interesting and interconnected web of secrets, some of which are extremely personal to travelers. In the center of it all is Maura Franklin who is as mysterious as one can get.
1899 has an ensemble cast mainly international artists. Emily Beecham is portraying Maura Franklin. She is best known for her role as Alice Woodard in the drama Little Joe. Her other films include The Pursuit of Love, Hail Caesar, and Cruella. Dark Fans would be able to recognize Andreas Pietschmann who played the role of grown-up Jonas. In 1899, he is starring as Eyk Larsen. Welsh actor Aneurin Barnard, known for playing Davey in Hundy Dory and Gibson in Dunkirk will also be on the series. Other actors include Miguel Bernardeau, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Mathilde Ollivier, Rosalie Craig, Maciej Musial, Jonas Bloquet, Gabby Wong, Fflyn Edwards, Yann Gael, José Pimentão, Martin Greis-Rosenthal, Anton Lesser, Maria Erwolter, and Isabella Wei. All these actors will be seen, speaking in their native lingos.
Netflix premiered the first two episodes of 1899 at the 2022 edition of the Toronto International Film Festival. 1899 is all set to air on Netflix on November 17, 2022. So fans of Dark, you'll don't have to wait much longer to see the new series drop. The Pilot episode is called "The Ship" and the series comprises eight episodes each 60 minutes long.
