Emilia Clarke Reveals Which Sex Scene In Game Of Thrones Was The Most ‘Awkward’ To Film

Emilia Clarke has talked candidly about the most awkward sex scene she had to film for Game of Thrones.

One thing for sure, there are plenty of crass moments in Game of Thrones.

It was so infamous that a sequence from it even gave rise to the term “sexposition,” in which characters, in an attempt to keep viewers from becoming bored, give crucial story points while becoming hot and bothered.

Nudity and sex scenes were also a common part of Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen role, particularly in the early seasons.

Clarke has previously disclosed that she found shooting the naked sequences “terrifying” and that she had only recently graduated from theater school when she landed the part.

The star even opened up about how her co-star Jason Momoa – who played Khal Drogo – had ‘protected’ her on set, looking out for her while filming the scenes.

When asked which sequence was the most “awkward” for her, the celebrity made an unexpected decision.

She told Digital Spy: “Funnily enough the most awkward scene for me to film was the mildly lesbian scene with Roxanne [McKee].

“That was the most tricky I found. I don’t know why particularly, I think it because Dany found it tricky.”

In case you forgot, the scene in question is when McKee’s character, Daenerys’ handmaiden Doreah, gives her some advice on how to win over her husband Khal Drogo.

But while she is ‘instructing’ Daenerys viewers might be forgiven for feeling more than a little tension between the two characters.

Clarke went on: “Obviously with the much stronger scenes Dany had to go into a different mindset to try and escape, so I did as well whereas with the handmaiden scene it was more kind of, tricky.”

It wasn’t the only time that Daenerys’ character had some tension with another woman in the show.

Subsequent to their encounter, the Mother of Dragons and Gemma Whelan’s openly LGBTQ+ character Yara Greyjoy seemed to engage in a romantic conversation.

Clarke has previously opened up about one infamous scene where Daenerys’ husband Khal Drogo rapes her on their wedding night.

She recalled working with Jason Momoa on the sequence, saying, “He was crying more than I was,” and that he was constantly asking, “Can we get her a f**king robe? She’s shivering!

“He was so kind and considerate and cared about me as a human being.”

Clarke has since been quite explicit about establishing boundaries surrounding nude situations ever since her first experiences.

She said: “I’ve had fights on set before where I’m like, ‘No, the sheet stays up,’ and they’re like, ‘You don’t wanna disappoint your Game of Thrones fans.’ And I’m like, ‘F*ck you.’ ”
