10 Heartbreaking Movies That'll Definitely Make You Cry

Embrace your inner movie-crier and check out our list for some deeply moving gems.

Hachi

Are you ashamed of being a sensitive soul who often cries while watching deeply moving films? Well, don't be! Like we previously mentioned, breaking down while watching a movie is NOT a sign of weakness. In fact, it actually means that you're the opposite! Crying helps you release bottled-up emotions and it helps you to deal with them better. Crying makes us connect with other people and helps us heal. Paul J. Zak, a scientist, and author at Claremont Graduate University conducted a study where he confirmed that those who cry during movies are more empathetic, and are stronger when facing daily challenges because they know how to handle their emotions better. The study goes into detail about why inspiring stories make us react a certain way. To put it short: it's good to cry! So get those tissue boxes ready. We're putting together a list of films that are bound to make you weep.

1. Toy Story 3

These movies are SO endearing. The third film in the Toy Story franchise definitely made us the most emotional. When Andy leaves for college, his toys think that he's abandoned them. Woody tried his best to prove that that's not true and they end up on quite an emotional journey.

2. Dead Poets Society

Is there any Robin Williams movie we don't cry over? Here, he plays an extraordinary English teacher who encourages his students to break free from conventional constructs and mindsets. This story is sure to tug at your heartstrings.

3. Hachi: A Dog's Tale

This film made us go on a non-stop weep fest. Any story involving the unconditional love of an animal destroys us. This one involves the story of an incredible bond between a professor and his dog that'll leave you crying for days.

4. Marley and Me

This movie may be promoted as a lighthearted comedy, and you'll end up falling in love with the adorably mischievous Marley, but oh lord, that ending is so heartbreaking to watch.

5. The Lion King

Spoiler ahead if you haven't watched the movie. But come on? Are there such people left? Mufasa's death scene will always take you right back to the first time you saw it as a kid... to the time a supposedly fun animated movie left you incredibly heartbroken. Decades later, it still does!

6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind follows Clementine undergoing a procedure to erase memories of her former boyfriend Joel from her mind. Do they find their way back to each other? There's so much love and pain in Michel Gondry’s 2004 movie, which is one of our absolute favorites.

7.Lion

This story is about a little Indian boy who gets separated from his family and is later adopted by an Australian couple. He then decides to search for his birth family and what a journey that turns out to be. Incredible movie with some superb acting!

8. My Girl

This coming-of-age charmer follows a summer in the life of an 11-year-old girl who learns about love and loss and befriends a young boy. Macaulay Culkin plays an adorably sweet dweeb with a fatal bee allergy. This seemingly sweet movie will crush you.

9. Brokeback Mountain

This beautiful love story of two cowboys discovering how they feel about each other over YEARS will move you to tears. Also, the fact that the world lost Ledger far too soon makes it all the more heartbreaking.

10.  Inside Out

It's a movie that beautifully and creatively teaches us to dig deep and reminds us that no emotion is "bad". All our emotions are a part of who we are and what makes us human. SUCH a wonderful animated film.
