Family That Only Walk On All Fours Leave Scientists Puzzled As They 'Shouldn't Exist'

Scientists puzzled over the Ulas family, where some members walked on all fours.

The Ulas Family

Scientists were astounded by the discovery of the Ulas family, who gained widespread attention for their unique mode of locomotion documented in the film "The Family That Walks On All Fours." Despite the rapid pace of scientific discovery in recent times, such cases continue to puzzle researchers.

The Ulas family, subject of the documentary, caught the interest of Turkish scientists who documented their case in a medical paper. Led by evolutionary psychologist Professor Nicholas Humphrey, the team delved into the family's condition, which was characterized by six out of eighteen children walking on all fours due to a 'unique disability.' While some initially speculated that the family had undergone a form of devolution, Professor Humphrey dismissed this notion as both 'deeply insulting' and 'scientifically irresponsible.'

Instead of accepting a simplistic explanation, Professor Humphrey and his team embarked on a quest to uncover the true cause behind the family's condition. Despite conducting neurological scans and analyzing skeletal structures, they were unable to pinpoint a conclusive answer. Even upon revisiting the family, they found no immediate explanation for the phenomenon.

Years later, a breakthrough came when a team of Danish scientists from Aarhus University identified the root cause of the family's condition as Cerebellar Ataxia, Mental Retardation, and Dysequilibrium Syndrome (CAMRQ). This syndrome, resulting from a rare mutation, disrupts the distribution of molecules of fat by proteins, leading to defective nerve cells, brain damage, and impaired balance. Consequently, members of the Ulas family walked on all fours due to their inability to maintain upright posture.

The revelation of CAMRQ provided a long-awaited explanation for the Ulas family's unique circumstance, shedding light on a condition previously unknown to science. Despite initial bafflement, the collaborative efforts of researchers ultimately unraveled the mystery surrounding this extraordinary case.
